A Cinema Lovers Guide to November in Liverpool

In a month where one of our most precious exhibition centres, FACT, was granted £250,000 for their large scale, Rewire project in Toxteth by the Arts Council, we couldn’t ignore the fantastic film festivities on offer throughout the month.

Last month was chocked full of scary screenings and next month is full of Christmas crackers, but this month has that little something different going on, whilst FACT show us why we love them so much. So, as we sit in between themes, here are our top picks of what is happening in cinema in Liverpool this month.

Victoria and Abdul, The Philharmonic Hall – 21st November

There is something undeniably special about seeing something on the silver screen at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall and, this month, the period tale of an unlikely friendship gets the treatment of being screen in this sumptuous setting. The film follows the relationship of Queen Victoria, played by Judi Dench, and a servant, Abdul, played by Ali Fazal. It’s a feel good flick that perfectly suits the surroundings. Settle down into this royal story, in a royal seat.

Liverpool Film Night, FACT – 22nd November

Each year Liverpool Film Night provides a fantastic opportunity to recognise and network with the latest film talent from across the region. Featuring a panel of industry experts consisting of David A Hughes, award-winning composer and producer; Carl Loughlin, local actor and filmmaker; and Helen Walsh, author and director, we invite you to join us as we celebrate a programme of short films selected by our head judge filmmaker and senior lecturer at LJMU Demelza Kooij.

Each ticket includes a free glass of prosecco or soft drink on arrival, so come and take part in the night that gives local talent a place on the big screen. It’s after the credits have rolled that panel members will take part in a Q&A where they’ll discuss the films shown, and answer your questions on filmmaking and getting into the industry.

LIVFF, FACT – 12TH November

The Liverpool Independent Film Festival presents a haunting selection of short films to bend the mind and hit your soul. A psychological institute, a tale from behind the door, a pickpocket with a conscience, a visit to the morgue, a girl’s identity, a cell phone call, a wild figure, a kidnapping, and a desperate mother are what’s in stall in our mix of darkly brilliant short films. Somewhat of a hangover from the Halloween season, LIVFF have been championing innovative, local film making that pushes boundaries and helps those filmmakers hit the next level, whilst also bringing makers from around the world to our city. There is no better home that we can give these budding creators than FACT.

Plus there is a special preview of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ this Friday 10th November which documents the story behind one of the recognisable songs not just in the city but internationally too.

Under Cinema, FACT  – 26TH Oct to 18th Feb

Wu Tsang is a filmmaker, artist and performer based in Berlin and New York who is bringing her latest work to Liverpool. The exhibition Under Cinema investigates how artistic practice, and its products, are positioned to challenge dominant narratives. The world premiere of a newly commissioned film of the same name features the acclaimed American singer-songwriter Kelela, and is staged as a site- specific installation for FACT’s Gallery 2, which is located under the cinema space. This is complemented by the UK premiere of We hold where study (2017): a choreographic approach to image-making and mourning, enacting a series of duets both within and between images. This one may be a little niche, however, it is not to be sniffed at, offering something completely unique from 26th October to 28th February 2018.

Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets, Echo Arena – 1st December

Ok, we are cheating on this one a little bit, as it falls over into next month. However, with it being on the 1st, it would be too late if we left until next months edition and we would hate for you to miss out on this unique experience. Cars fly, trees fight back, and monsters are on the loose in Harry’s second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! This concert features the film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in high-definition, on a gigantic screen, while a live orchestra performs John Williams’ unforgettable score. Relive every magical moment as the music brings life to a story that has bewitched the world. This is similar to what happens at The Phil but on the next level!

If Stranger Things hasn’t taken over your life in the weeks since season 2 has been released, then, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?  No doubt you will have binged watched it, and if you haven’t, then get on it as spoilers may be imminent. Fancy dress is not only welcomed it is greatly encouraged! There’s a free shooter in it for anyone who dares to don some sick 80s apparel and free snacks and props for anybody who buys a ticket online. If you turn up on the night we can’t gurantee there will be any left, or seats for that matter, so book your tickets now to secure a table. Quick tip – charge your phone, it’s a smartphone quiz, but if you’re caught cheating, you’ll be thrown into the upside down.

October was awash with Halloween themed movie nights across the city, creating a buzz for film fans of the Horror variety. Now, just before the Christmas season barges its way into our lives, the cinema scene in the city is just as lively as it was last month, just without the ghoulish guise.
