Gin Festival Liverpool is coming and we have got your questions answered
If you love your gin you are about to be a very happy person, well that’s if you managed to get a ticket in time. The Gin Festival Liverpool is taking over the Crypt next month and we spoke to Laura from the festival to find out more about one of our best loved and most popular drinks and what we can expect from three days of gin loveliness in Liverpool.
Gin and the way people drink it have really changed over the past couple of years, why has it become so popular?
Gins popularity really has skyrocketed in the last decade! This is due in part, to the advent of small batch and craft gins like Sipsmith, Hendricks and Martin Millers. Headed by distillers who searched for the perfect ingredients and innovative flavours, they showed the world that gin can be interesting and complex, that there’s massive scope to experiment and thousands of varieties that we’re yet to sample.
It helps that gin’s an incredibly versatile spirit, each individual gin having a myriad of serves and that’s even before we move onto cocktails! Classic cocktails and modern cocktail culture wouldn’t be anything without gin – not that I’m biased.
What can we expect from the Gin Festival Liverpool?
This summer, Gin Festival Liverpool will bring the biggest festival range of small batch, premium and craft gins ever to have hit the city! With such incredible gins, there’s definitely going to be something there for you. You’ll also find loads of like minded folks who want to drink gin, talk gin and join you as you listen to industry experts and distillers talk about their beloved spirits. And that’s even before we get to the music and the entertainment! Whatever time or day you have tickets for, you’ll have a brilliant time.
Give us your top 3 things at the festival we should all see (or drink!).
Gin, gin and more gin!
Seriously though: the amazing range of gins, the perfectly boozy and informative masterclasses and the chance to find your new, favourite gin.
You have over 100 gins in the brochure at the festival – what makes each one different?
I’d love to talk to you about each gin and what makes it unique but I think you’d get bored pretty quickly – basically, gins vary massively in base spirit, botanicals used, quantity of botanicals, the kind of water, the different methods of distillation – the possibilities are almost endless, and so are the flavours.
That said, there is one surefire way to make all gins taste practically the same drown them in tonic! We obviously don’t recommend that..
Is it true that gin is the best thing to drink if dieting?
Gin’s always the best thing to drink! But yes, a high quality gin (with a low sugar content) and a light or slimline tonic is the perfect, diet drink.
Gin Festival Liverpool takes place at Lutyens Crypt from Thursday 28th – Saturday 30th July 2016. Although the festival is now sold out there are other gin festivals that take place across the country including Burnley and Leeds. Info here www.ginfestival.com/events
