Homeless Liverpool 04: How can you help?

Day four of our look at homelessness in Liverpool, all week long we are bringing you chats and conversation with people on the front line tackling the issue first hand, and directly helping those in need. But how can you help? Should you give? What should you give? Watch above to find out more.

We joined the Paper Cup Project on one of their weekly action nights. Michelle Langan is the founder of the group and has been blogging as we go too.

People always ask us how they can help the homeless on our streets. There’s loads of conflicting information on what to do to help someone. We know from our experience as a team, that the smallest things can make a difference. Talking to someone costs nothing. Give five minutes of your time. Stop, smile, have a chat. Ask people what they need.

One man we know told us how he had spent all day without one single conversation. He sat on Bold Street with his dog, and even at the busiest parts of the day, not one person stopped to ask if he was ok or if he needed anything. Eventually, one lady stopped in front of him and said ‘it’s ok, you’re not invisible.’ It made his day that this woman stopped and acknowledged he was there.

So stop. Buy someone a cuppa. Have a chat. Give them a pound or a sandwich. It’s dead easy!
