Will Darren ‘The Gorilla’ Till triumph on home soil?

Local lad Darren Till takes on American Stephen Thompson at Echo Arena Saturday, in a highly anticipated UFC welterweight bout.

With tickets for the event within an hour of going on sale, all eyes will be on Till as he headlines the first ever UFC Fight Night to take place in his home city.

‘The Gorilla’ was an early starter when it came to combat, turning professional in Muay Thai aged just 15. Aged 17, Till turned his attention to MMA and began to train under Team Kaobon. But after narrowly avoiding death after being stabbed in the back during a nightclub brawl,  his fledging sport career was nearly over before it had begun.

Darren took this warning sign as an opportunity to escape the distractions of the city and headed to Brazil to concentrate on his training. Having initially planned to stay in South America for six months, Till stayed for three years and came back hungry to win MMA titles.

Undefeated in his seventeen professional fights so far, Till is on course to do just that and become a superstar of the UFC brand. He’ll certainly be looking to make a big splash in front of his home crowd this weekend.

Also on the card on Sunday are Welterweights Neil Magny and Gunnar Nelson – both ranked within the top 15 of the UFC’s 170lbs division.
