6 Soulful Songwriters to check out at LIMF 2017

Liverpool International Music Festival 2017 is just days away and this year’s line-up has a beat to suit all tastes.

Whether Classical is your cup of tea, or you prefer EDM washed down with a WKD, LIMF has an artist on the line-up for you. As we get through the final week of waiting, we’re here to show you just how eclectic the festival is with a focus on the array of Soul and R&B on offer.

Here’s 6 soulful songwriters to catch at LIMF 2017 this week…..

1 – DELIAH, Saturday 16:40, The Academy Stage

A late addition to proceedings, DELIAH take to The Academy Stage backed by their band on the Saturday. 2016 saw the duo and their band, play at the likes of Liverpool Music Week and the main stage at various festivals across the UK. They also supported Maverick Sabre on his Unplugged Tour and frequented the secret Sofar sounds sessions. 2017 has seen the duo release just one song, but it’s a belter for the summer. The full band show packs a real punch, so make sure that you find yourself at The Academy Stage for these guys, if not for the fantastic local line-up on offer across the weekend.

2 – JP Cooper, Sunday 17:10, Central Stage

JP Cooper is no stranger to LIMF not the city circuit. We’ve caught him three times in recent years, twice with just his guitar, once with a full band and we’ve been blown away every time by his voice and storytelling. There are few people that can do what he does with his voice, not just ability wise, but to a person’s soul. Cooper straddles the line between Soul and Folk, however his vocal tone and gospel influence makes him a definite pick if you’re looking for a soul fix.

3 – XamVolo, Friday 19:25, It’s Liverpool Stage

This guy is a must see at LIMF 2017. The Mad Professor of Soul, as we like to call him, is verging on musical genius with his latest material and we hear there’s an album in the pipeline too. Along with his numerous releases, Volo has been spending the year playing all over the UK as well as releases a live video or two as he goes. Most impressively Volo played legendary London venue, KOKO, with the rest of his band, a show that he’s set to bring to the It’s Liverpool Stage on the Friday with a steam-punk bang!

4 – Jessie Reyez, Sunday 15:45, Central Stage

Soul and R&B has a wide spectrum these days, hence the likes of JP Cooper and XamVolo being on the same list. Now we head over to the slightly darker side of its spectrum; the crazier side. Jessie Reyez’ new album, Kiddo, is a tour de force of talent, emotion and groove, each track as raw as the next. There’s nothing else out at the moment quite like the debut from Reyez, making us excited, as well as intrigued, for her LIMF debut.

5 – Corrine Bailey Rae, Sunday 18:40, Central Stage

Now that we’re done with the darker side of things, we’re going to head to a more quaint, cute side of the Soul/R&B spectrum. Corrine Bailey Rae first dropped on to everyone’s radar with ‘Put Your Records On’ over 10 years ago, in 2006. Since then she has been touring the world, writing and releasing new, beautiful Soul music. Bailey Rae is probably the closest you can get on this bill to classic R&B, perfect for a sunny day in the park. If you enjoyed last year’s headliner, Lianne La Havas, then you’re going to enjoy this show!

6 – Etta Bond, Sunday 13:25, Central Stage

Etta Bond is back, and she’s back with a groovy bang. Her new material sees her collaborating with Chris Loco, a move that is proving to be a match made in heaven. The groove is infectious, as it should be in this genre, whilst the vocals are so soulful that you find yourself wiggling your first finger and shaking your head almost immediately. We can’t wait to see what she does with her central stage slot on the Sunday afternoon.

LIMF does a phenomenal job of showcasing a wide array of style and genres, putting them on a bill that feels completely natural. If Soul is not entirely your thing then keep your eyes peeled as we run down through various genres to tailor your weekend to your tastes.
