6 Things we’ll all be talking about in Liverpool in 2018
2018 is going to be a huge year for events in Liverpool and we love an excuse to glam up and gossip.
As Culture Liverpool releases details about the programme of Capital of Culture 10th Anniversary celebrations, we’re filling our ASOS online basket with cute outfits and booking days off work to make sure we don’t miss a thing. 2018 will be the year you stock up on your culture fix, learn more about our city’s incredible history and you might just back a winner at the Grand National.
Nationally there’s plenty to gab about as another royal wedding and royal baby will make the headlines later this year and as the FIFA World Cup qualifiers continue we’re eagerly awaiting the England squad line up announcement. Could this be our year? We’re putting in leave and donning three lion on our shirts…..just in case!
Here’s 6 things we’ll all be talking about in 2018…..
1 – An Army marches on Liverpool
Prepare to have you mind blown as China’s First Emperor and the Terracotta Warriors come to the UK for the first time in a generation and our very own World Museum is the host. Opening 9 February to 28 October 2018, this incredible exhibition features more than 180 spectacular artefacts from museums across Shaanxi Province, more than half of which have never been on show in the UK before. Get your tickets here.
2 – Meghan & Harry tie the knot
In the words of comedian Russell Howard ‘A ginger pulled a hottie’ and we’ve been spellbound by their relationship since! Prince Harry will wed former Suits actress Meghan Markle in May 2018 and we’re waiting with baited breath as to whether we’re all getting a day off work. Love them or hate them, the royal family will be stacking up the headlines in 2018 as we talk about the dress, the cute bridesmaids and what Diana would’ve made of it all?
3 – Homelessness in Liverpool
Liverpool Mayor, Joe Anderson said “the government can whistle” as he pushes towards ending all rough sleeping in the city. In his blog for The Huffington Post, Mayor Anderson said he wouldn’t not be told who he can and cannot help in his own city and has invited Tory ministers to take him on face to face. Having launched the ‘Always Room Inside’ campaign at new facility, Labre House, we’re hoping homelessness will make more 2018 headlines as Liverpool leads the way with kindness.
4 – Jurassic World & Star Wars Solo
Movie buffs ate eagerly awaiting a number of Hollywood blockbusters on the big screen this year as two HUGE franchises release the next chapter of their stories. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom hits our screens on 22nd June and the plot remains firmly under-wraps but we’re assuming more Chris Pratt and suspiciously intelligent Velociraptors! Star Wars fans will likely queue around the block for Solo: A Star Wars Story which is released in the UK on 25th May. Set ten years before A New Hope, this next instalment takes us on a journey back in time with a stellar cast.
5 – River Mersey Fun
We predict that the Mersey will feature heavily in your Instagram posts and Facebook memories in 2018 as the city welcomes a huge haul of maritime fun. From the Tall Ships Regatta in May, to the thrilling end of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in July and of course the River Mersey Festival, River of Light celebrations and a number of festivals and a brand new Aqua Park at Albert Dock. Get ready to spend summer days, and autumn evenings enjoying the views.
6 – FIFA World Cup 2018
There’s no getting away from it. From Thursday 14th June 2018 all talk will be focussed on Group G talk as the first of 64 games kicks off in Russia. According to Carragh in his Telegraph column, Gareth Southgate’s young England team need to ‘turn on the style’ to better Roy Hodgson’s 2014 Brazil effort. Looking at the positives, an enthusiastic approach from talent such as Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling could just see us sail through group stages and into the main event.
