First up lets talk about Liverpool’s fascination with Sui mai, because when we asked for your favourite dish recommendations, you all raved about it!

Who would’ve known that this traditional Cantonese dumpling, filled with ground pork, mushrooms, ginger and spring onions could cause such a stir across one western city? If you’re having a party and there’s no Sui mai, is it really a scouse party?

This contemporary themed restaurant has been serving up some of the best Chinese and Cantonese cuisine for more than 20 years and remains a firm favourite with us scousers. 2 – Chi Nar Kitchen, Penny Lane

Second on the list of best siu mai producers is the Chi Nar Kitchen on Penny Lane. For a mere £3.20 you can feast on a portion of these delightful dumplings and even better, you can get them delivered straight to your door! With 5 star reviews on Just Eat, this Allerton based take-away begins delivery form 5:45pm daily, so plan your weekend and get your order in now! 3 – Shang Hai House, Northway

How about a dum-sum combination starter for two to share this weekend as you get into the Chinese New Year spirit? A Supermarket Sweep


If you fancy a bit of a challenge this Chinese New Year weekend, why not have a go at creating your favourite dishes at home, using authentic ingredients from one of the many local Chinese supermarkets? We’ve reckon you’ll be amazed by some of the exotic products that are available right on our doorstep, and its a great experience for the little chefs too! Recipe at the ready, here’s three of the best Liverpool based Chinese supermarkets that will inspire your cooking.

1 – Matta’s International Foods, Bold Street. From rice vinegar to bean curd and wheatgrass powder, you’ll find all manner of wonderful items right in the heart of the city, at Matta’s.

2 – Hondo Supermarket, Upper Duke Street. A supplier not only to local people but also the nearby restaurant trade, Hondo Supermarket is probably the most famous and recognisable store, right opposite the Chinese Arch.


3 – Chung Wah Supermarket, Hardy Street. Chung Wah is a huge favourite among students for their brilliant discounts and deals, plus friendly staff and huge array of produce. Go and have a wander!
