Lightning Seeds plus special guests to play huge Birkenhead Park concert
One of our areas best loved bands are headlining a special event at Birkenhead Park as part of Wirral’s Borough of Culture year.
Tickets are on sale now for a not-to-be-missed musical extravaganza in Wirral featuring legendary bands from Merseyside headlined by Lightning Seeds.
Taking place on Sunday 8 September, Lightning Seeds will headline an incredible evening of live music in Birkenhead Park alongside iconic bands The Christians and China Crisis.
Drawing from their chart-topping hits and classic tunes, these much-loved bands will be ‘coming home’ to Merseyside as the finale of an amazing weekend in Birkenhead Park on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 September, which includes the Wirral Food & Drink Festival across the weekend and a performance by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra on the Saturday evening.
Lightning Seeds were formed in Liverpool in 1989 by frontman Ian Broudie and are responsible for some of the most well-known tracks of the 1990s including Life of Riley, Lucky You and Pure. Football favourite Three Lions, a collaboration with comedians Baddiel and Skinner, became an instant anthem on its release and united the nation behind England’s Euro ‘96 effort. The song has topped the charts three times since its original release in 1996.
The Christians are known for having the highest selling debut album of any artist at Island Records and produced international chart hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their biggest hits include Forgotten Town, When the Fingers Point, Ideal World, and Harvest For The World.
China Crisis found major success in the UK with five Top 40 singles and three Top 40 albums. Best known for their string of hit singles, including Black Man Ray, Christian, and Wishful Thinking, their performance will tie together a weekend of music celebrating the talents of Liverpool City Region.
This performance will take place as part of a September to remember in Birkenhead Park, the world’s first public park and the inspiration for New York’s Central Park. Following this phenomenal weekend, the prestigious OVO Energy Tour of Britain will come to Wirral for the first time on Wednesday 11 September, with the start and finish line in the park.
Cllr Christine Spriggs, Cabinet Member for Culture and Tourism said: “We are thrilled to bring Lightning Seeds, The Christians and China Crisis to Birkenhead Park this September. These incredible bands have collectively and individually helped shape the Merseyside music scene, producing classic hits of their own and working with incredible artists. Their instantly recognisable songs have been adored by music fans from across the globe and showcased the talent of our city region.
“2019 has been an exciting year for Wirral as Liverpool City Region’s Borough of Culture. Wirral Council have developed a ground-breaking programme, featuring unmissable events like this. The first weekend of September is shaping up to be an incredible celebration as Birkenhead Park plays host to a number of stellar events.”
The Borough of Culture initiative was introduced by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and is designed to encourage cultural activities across the region.
