WATCH: We take you to the moon, in Birkenhead!

Get ready for lift off…viewing times for Luke Jerram’s world-renowned Museum of the Moon at Birkenhead Town Hall have now been announced and we have got you an exclusive first look which you can watch above.

Visitors wanting to see the extraordinary installation can take a trip to the moon between Friday 25 October and Friday 15 November.

The installation allows people to get up-close with the moon’s surface and has wowed audiences around the globe – including thousands at Liverpool Cathedral last year. When it comes to Wirral as part of this year’s Borough of Culture programme, the moon will be suspended in the stunning surroundings of the Assembly Room of the Grade II* listed Birkenhead Town Hall.

For opening weekend, Museum of the Moon will be open from 11am on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October, with last entry at 6pm each day. Museum of the Moon will then be open Wednesdays – Saturdays, plus an additional opening on Tuesday 29 October during school half-term. It will be open from 11am – 6pm throughout. Visitors are advised to check visitwirral.com and @ImagineWirral on Twitter for updates before travelling, as opening times are subject to change.

During the three weeks, visitors will be able to experience extremely detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. Each centimetre of the 7m internally lit sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface.

The world-famous installation will be accompanied by a special programme of lunar-inspired events. These include free drop-in performances ofThe Glamournauts by Mooncup Theatre on Wednesday 30 October which charts 50 years of female achievement across the cosmos. There will also be a ticketed evening performance by the 18th Century Concert Orchestra on Wednesday 13 November. More details of all these events can be found on visitwirral.com.

Cllr Christine Spriggs, Cabinet Member for Culture and Tourism said: “Wirral’s year as Borough of Culture for Liverpool City Region has seen outstanding cultural events and projects create incredible memories for our residents and visitors, and we’re already looking forward to how we can build on this in 2020.

Museum of the Moon will be a spectacular way to round off 2019, during the closing chapter of this year’s events. Our final events are influenced by Wirral’s big skies and will create awe-inspiring moments for visitors – particularly our children and young people.”

The Borough of Culture initiative was introduced by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and is designed to encourage cultural activities across the region. Wirral’s events this year have been inspired by discovery, exploration and the great outdoors.
