Top ten Scouse Christmas pressies
By Rachel Biggs
Remember the promise you made yourself last year that you wouldn’t leave all your Christmas shopping to the last minute next time? It was when you were in a massive queue in HMV buying a DVD you were pretty sure your dad already had, whilst trying to work out if your mum would be fine with a Liverpool One voucher.
Whether you like it or not it’s time to start looking now. Just one or two bits when you happen to be in town, or a few things ordered from the internet when you are meant to be in work. It all adds up, and before you know it you are sat all smug with a drink on Christmas Eve whilst your mate has a breakdown over what to get their nan.
Need ideas? Here are a few bits around Liverpool to get you going.
- Pop Up Liverpool. £10
The website Made Here has some brilliant gifts, all made in Liverpool, starting from just £2.99. We love this Pop up Liverpool Set, which fits inside an envelope so you can send it with a card. So if you have a relative or mate who has moved away from home, you can send them this and they recreate the Liverpool skyline on their mantle piece, and it won’t cost you a fortune to post!
2. Liverpool Purple Wheelie Bin Desk Toy. £4.99
The only thing we love more than miniature items is a good pun, and this present, from long time Christmas present saviours Utility on Bold Street, combines both. A great little present for someone you know who struggles to keep all their stuff in one place. Nice way of reassuring scouseness in the office or seminar room too.
3. 14 inch Patent Cambridge Yellow Satchel. £115
These bags from Merseyside based The Leather Satchel Company turn heads wherever you go. All of their bags are handcrafted in their workshop in Huyton, and you can get them in every colour, style and size imaginable. You can even add initials on the front in different colouring to make it even more of a gift.
4. Christmas Celebration ‘Cake’. £46
Let’s face it, no-one really likes Christmas pudding. It’s a laugh to set on fire, but after that we’re all just trying to work out how much we need to eat to make sure we save some room for the cheese board. Well imagine how popular you’ll be if you turn up with this from The Liverpool Cheese Company, which manages to combine both. Also the best Christmas presents are the ones they have to share with you!
5. Sahita Extra Virgin Olive Oil Gift Set. £45
Lunya on College Lane is far from a secret. North West Good Food Guide Restaurant of the Year two years running and, in our opinion, the finest deli in the city centre. But the deli doesn’t just sell the best sandwiches in town. At Christmas they have brilliant gift sets like this one, Extra Virgin Olive Oil in Catalan artist printed bottles. The kind of bottle you’ll wash out and keep forever.
6. Supersub by David Fairclough / A Different Road by Bob Latchford. £18.99
Books are a great Christmas present. Everyone likes a book and they are dead easy to wrap! Liverpool publishers De Coubertin have released two great autobiographies in the last few months for the football fan in your family. For The Reds the original Supersub, David Fairclough has written a book about his time at Liverpool during the clubs most successful period. For The Blues striker Bob Latchford on a remarkable Everton career. These books are available from the De Courbertin website or all good bookshops in Merseyside.
7. The Baltic Fleet. £15
January is the time of year we all swear off the booze and pay for a gym membership we’ll use about twice. Why not make this period of abstinence harder for someone you know by buying them a sketch of their favourite pub. We love this one of The Baltic Fleet, but Wirral-based artist Nick Jackson has done others too, such as The Cambridge and The Phil. They are available to buy on the Independent Liverpool website.
8. Hold My Trainer. £28
Myne Boutique in Bluecoat Chambers have got loads of good stock fillers in for Christmas if you are a bit worried you’ve spent more on one sibling than another. They’ve also found the best way to display your awesome new shoes that we think we’ve ever seen. On the wall, held up. Brilliant.
9. FACT Membership. £45, £40 retired, £15 student
Know someone who bores you to death with how they “wished they went to the Cinema more”? Put your money where their mouth is by buying them a membership for FACT. For the money you get four free cinema tickets as well as money off future trips as well as a discount at the bar and café. You also get invited to exclusive events and screenings.
10. Luna Christmas Collection. £15
OK, we all buy the £1 wrapping paper from the market stall on the way home from Christmas shopping. There’s just so much to wrap! But what about the extra special stuff for close family and bezzies? New Liverpool company Luna have produced a selection of Christmas cards, gift wrap and tags so pretty, don’t be surprised to see people unwrapping their gifts with the utmost care so they can use it themselves next year.
