Watch as the Red Bull Drift Shifters roar into Liverpool for a UK first, motorsport spectacular

Liverpool city centre came alive with the sound of break horse power on Sunday morning as 12 high performance machines took over The Strand.

Motorsport fans queued along The Strand from the early hours on Sunday 19th August 2018 as the Red Bull Drift Shifters prepared to take on a UK, first motorsport event. Not only was this the first time the Drifting event had been held in the UK, it was the first time this competition has been held in the northern hemisphere. The action unfolded from 10:30am right in front of our iconic Three Graces and we captured it all.

Watch above as our cameras take you trackside for all the Red Bull Drift Shifters action.

With 12 drivers and pit crews from around the globe, including ‘Mad’ Mike Whiddett, the founder of this new competition, the city came alive with a bang as the performance cars accelerated from the tunnel entrance, around the biggest and most outrageous course to date.

With sensor points around the course, each driver must come into close contact with each one to score points. Brand new obstacles for the Liverpool course included a Yellow Submarine, The Undertaker Truck and the Pier Head Wallride, all of which challenged the drivers to perform incredible feats of control, power and drift to light up the beacons.

New Zealand driver, Gaz Whiter scored highest and took 1st place on the podium, his trophy presented by Lord Mayor Liverpool, Cllr, Christine Banks. When asked how it felt to win, with his last lap reaching the highest score of the day, Gaz said: “It’s been amazing! The electricity from the fans here in Liverpool was incredible and it’s been a blast to put on a show in the UK. I had my route mapped out in my head, it was a bit risky, but thankfully it paid off. The talent on the track was beyond measure and I’m stoked that Red Bull and Mad Mike put on such an epic show. It was a blast!”

Alongside the track action, motorsport and drifting fans were able to check out a number of stalls and displays from ESSO, GoPro, Red Bull official merchandise and informative exhibits from motor racing partners such as traffic police and sponsors.

We have to say a huge congrats to Liverpool City Council, Culture Liverpool and partners for staging a hugely successful, UK first event right in the heart of our amazing city.
