WATCH: Liverpool launches its own Transgender Family Support Group
Liverpool has always been an amazing city, full of diversity, acceptance and general friendliness amongst everyone who lives here.
Well, that is only growing with the launch of Transgender Youth charity, Mermaids’ Family Support Group in South Liverpool.
Mermaids is passionate about supporting children, young people, and their families to achieve a happier life in the face of great adversity. They work to raise awareness about gender nonconformity in children and young people amongst professionals and the general public. They also campaign for the recognition of gender dysphoria in young people and lobby for improvements in professional services.
Formed in 1995 by a group of parents brought together by their children’s gender dysphoria, Mermaids has evolved and grown to meet demand and offer appropriate resources to young people, their families and carers, and professionals working with gender variant young people. Primarily a support group, their focus has widened dramatically over the last few years.
Mermaids supports children and young people up to 20 years old who are gender diverse, and their families, and professionals involved in their care.
It is difficult to know how many people are affected but the Equality and Human Rights Commission undertook a survey in 2012 of 10,000 people, which indicated that around 1% were dealing with gender variance to some degree.
We were at the launch on Saturday 22nd April, and one of the attendees was kind enough to say this about the event:
“What a ‘Mermazing’ day we all had!!
Smiling faces, nobody was sad.
Children laughing and having fun,
Enjoying sweeties and a fabulous bun
Taking a ride in the new Police car
A trip round the block – so not too far
Everyone chatting, the time quickly passed by
Sun shining brightly – Pride flag flying high
Gender questioning children and young people beside
Educating so many in the community so wide
Speeches inspiring, many wise words were said
A positive feeling for the future ahead
Raising awareness with the Barclays Team
Barry’s Bikes, this one’s yours, children’s faces did beam
To Embrace and Educate with a Passion and Drive
To Empower each other with an inner Positive Pride
Thank you to Jan and all who gave their time to attend, support and enthuse together at the Mersey Mermaids Launch. Here’s to more meetings and events in the future, ensuring continued development and support for each child, youth and their families throughout the community.”
