Who Is DJ Jazzy Jeff And Why Should You See Him At LIMF 2018?
LIMF 2018 is carrying on its tradition of bringing huge names to the city alongside local talent, on various stages around Sefton Park on 21st and 22nd July.
One of those huge names is the Hip Hop icon, DJ Jazzy Jeff. We find it hard to believe that you don’t know that name, especially because of his work with The Fresh Prince himself. But, for those who don’t, or those who want to know more, this is who DJ Jazzy Jeff is and exactly why you cannot miss him at LIMF 2018.
No one can dispute the fact that DJ Jazzy Jeff paved the way for many DJs after him, changing the art form forever and making turntablism, and the classic DJ scratch technique, world famous. Although used before with the likes of Run DMC, DJ Jazzy Jeff, along with the likes of DJ Cash Money, modernised and innovated the technique. It’s hard to believe that 90’s Hip Hop and R&B sound without the DJ scratching. He may be most famous for his work with Will Smith as The Fresh Prince, but his track, A Touch of Jazz, began the movement that changed the genre, and world, forever.
We know that this seems pretty obvious, I mean, the clue is in the name, right? However, he is not just any DJ, he is one of the originals that brought the art form to the mainstream. This is also to let you know that even though DJ Jazzy Jeff is one of the biggest, and most iconic names on the bill, he is not on the Central Stage, but is headlining the True School Club House on Sunday 22nd July.
After the duo of Smith and Jeff went their separate ways, Jeff became a wildly successful producer in the R&B, Soul and Hip Hop world. Including his own stuff, he has a discography that spans over 25 years, having produced huge names such as Eminem, The Roots, Jill Scott and, of course, the later work of Will Smith. He even contributes his unmistakable ‘scratch’ to various records including Dr Dre’s N.W.A biopic, Straight Outta Compton.
You don’t just get a man stood behind his decks with this one. Jeff oozes cool on stage and shows you that cutting and scratching like he does is one hell of a physical task. Along with his sideman, Jeff puts on a show to remember and lets his beats and skills do the talking. He looks right at home on stage as the charisma and experience shines from him. You won’t be able to take your eyes off the stage, as well as having your body taken over by the beats.
Grammy Award Winner
It’s not everyday that we have a multi Grammy award-winning artist in Sefton Park, but that’s exactly what we have on True School Club House stage. Both Grammy’s were won for collaborations with The Fresh Prince, and are the Hip Hop bangers ‘Parents Just Don’t Understand’ and ‘Summertime’. That doesn’t even include his work with Grammy Award winning artists that he has performed with or produced, such as those above.
All of that stage presence doesn’t come from nowhere; Jeff has previous in other areas of performing arts featuring alongside best friend Will Smith as a guest star in Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He played Will’s best friend on the show, Jazz, and was always seen either doing the pairs classic high five, or being thrown out of the mansion by James Avery’s Uncle Phil.
DJ Jazzy Jeff is one of the biggest artists at the festival, and a legend in his own right. But there are many more on the LIMF line-up that are either the next big thing or a bona fide big thing, and we’re telling you about them on the lead up to the big weekend.
