Who Is Ray BLK And Why Should You See Her At LIMF 2018?

Continuing in our series of introducing the talent on offer at LIMF 2018, we’re taking a look at British Soul/R&B break through act, Ray BLK, who will be taking to the Central Stage on Sunday 22nd July 2018.

There’s more to this girl than meets the eye, and there’s a lot to be excited at on first glance, so what more can there be?

BBC Sound of 2017

Ray BLK was, officially, the Sound of 2017, as chosen by the BBC before each year begins. Other nominees included the massive artists such as Rag n Bone Man, Cabbage and fellow LIMF act, Stefflon Don. She became the first unsigned artist ever to win the prize and that was the start of a year that helped propel Ray BLK, making history in the process. Impressive, right?

MOBO Award Winner

Let’s continue with the awards theme for now, as Ray BLK has spent this early part of her career picking up prestigious awards that are there to predict a bright future for break through artists. Prior to becoming the BBC Sound of 2017, BLK won the best newcomer category at the 2016 MOBO Awards, and after seeing what she has achieved since, boy were they right.

What do Stormzy, Wretch 32, Gorillaz, Tinie Tempah, Naughty Boy, RAYE and LIPA graduate, SG Lewis, all have in common? No, not just that they are all top level artists; they’ve all collaborated with Ray BLK. Whether it’s a featured appearance on their work, or a song writing collaboration with them featuring on her work, they’ve all received the BLK treatment through her fierce rhymes, silky vocals and performance style.

She’s Self-Made

Usually, we hear about these artists doing amazing things and you just assume that they’re signed to a label, because that’s how it works, right? Not in the case of Ray BLK. Although we’re sure she has a loyal, hard working team around her, she has done it all without a record label, self-releasing her first two albums. As we said, that makes her the first unsigned artist to win the coveted, BBC Sound of 2017. She is know signed to Island Records, a label that will surely be perfect for such a driving force.

She’s A Born Performer

Ray BLK is not just a tour de force when it comes to releasing her own music, she is even more so on stage, rapping and singing with a performance to excite and captivate in equal measure. I’m sure we all know how hard it is to just rap, or just sing, but to do both to her level of intellect and execution, all whilst putting on an energetic live show, is awe inspiring. You can catch her doing all that at LIMF 2018, on the Central Stage.

Someone who has had such a wealth of success through her sheer drive and hard work must have some pretty cutthroat values, right? Well it doesn’t seem like that with Ray BLK, with even her name stating her values. BLK stands for Building, Living, Knowing, things that she describes has her three highest values. Her character can also be heard throughout her lyrics, as she comments on important issues from her culture and speaks as a strong woman in the industry.

Ray BLK is another in a long line of artists that will be taking Sefton Park by storm this July, from the soulful sounds of her to the classical crossover of Hacienda Classical, there is something for everyone, so get your tickets now.
